PROGRAM: Tom Kielbowicz was a Army medic in Fulda Gap area of Germany in the early 1960s. He went there after a basic medic training of seven weeks then was assigned to a airborne medical evacuation (medivac) unit when the rules of medivac flying was still being worked out - in underpowered UH-1B model “Huey” transport helicopters - which he had never heard of before getting there - along the frontier with East Germany and Czechoslovakia. Flying in snowstorms, rain, fog, and in sunshine, transporting both military and civilian people to hospitals when called upon, Tom will transport you back to when flying was sometimes literally by the seat of your pants and railroad tracks to get from point A to point B with no navigation aids – and very little margin for error.

LUNCH: $9.50 per plate with a choice of Swiss Steak or Chicken Cordon Bleu, Hot Veggies, Mashed Potatoes and Gravy. This includes gratuity and the room rental fee.

Note! Call Tom Philo at 503-591-3227 ONLY if you are planning to EAT at the meeting - by February 10 so he can get a headcount for the lodge chef.

Joining

This non-profit organization is a great way to learn about the 8th Air Force in its roll in defeating Germany during World War II. The meeting is valuable to anyone interested in the history of WWII air combat.

People interested in learning more about the 8thAF, or to pass on what they know to others concerning the 8th AF contribution and other aviation unit histories that brought victory to the Allies in the European theatre of war (ETO) or other combat theatres, are encouraged to join the Oregon Chapter. Please fill out a membership form at the meeting.

The annual dues is $10. In addition, you can join the national organization whose dues are $25 a year. The national chapter puts out a quarterly magazine while the Oregon chapter puts out a quarterly newsletter plus a monthly news update.

There are currently 80 members who flew combat missions during WW II. We have members from the 15th, 10th, 12th, 8th, and 5th AF, and members who flew combat in the Navy, Marines, and Air Force from WW II, Korea, thru Vietnam, and the minor wars in-between.
